It’s not often that a voice so familiar on the airwaves turns to us with a personal ask… but GoodHope FM’s Lorenzo Darries needs a new heart and our support.

Western Cape, South Africa (20 July 2025) – Lorenzo Darries has spent his career giving South Africans the play-by-play, the energy, the love for the game… and now, he’s sharing something deeply personal: his fight for life.

In 2018, the beloved GoodHope FM Sports Presenter and Producer was diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy – a serious disease of the heart muscle that makes it harder for the heart to pump blood to the rest of the body. For some, it’s a manageable condition. For Lorenzo, it’s been life-altering. The diagnosis is not just clinical. It’s deeply emotional. Cardiomyopathy runs in his family, and he has already lost his mother and siblings to the same illness.

“So what does that mean… sometimes I get extremely sick and the heart just needs a bit of help from the Dr’s so the body can get back to operational duty,” Lorenzo shared.

“Seeing that I’ve been more than once in the hospital this year, I’m now officially being placed on the heart transplant list so I ask you to keep me in your prayers so we can push my current tinker for as long as possible.”

That “tinker”, his heart, has served him well through years of inspiring listeners and covering the beautiful game, but it now needs some help. A transplant. A second chance.

Lorenzo has started a crowdfunding campaign to help carry the financial load during this incredibly difficult season of life. With no income protection and frequent hospital visits ahead, the costs are piling up. He’s asked for support to help with basic living expenses, transport to appointments and medical costs. The everyday things that suddenly become mountains when you’re too sick to work.

So far, R50,915 has been raised towards the R200,000 goal, and the support from friends, fans and strangers has been deeply moving.

“Wishing you everything of the best. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Trust in God.”

“Wishing you all the best Lorenzo! We will pray for you and all you need to do is believe that it is done.”

His story is reminding South Africans of something simple and powerful: we show up for each other.

“I’ve always believed in showing up for others — now I’m humbly asking for that same support in return. Whether you can give R5, R50 or simply share this campaign, every gesture makes a difference and brings me one step closer to recovery.”

From the sidelines to the centre of his own match of a lifetime, Lorenzo’s not giving up. And judging by the love pouring in… neither are we.
