South African Taxi Associations are taking a stand against the violence in South Africa and discouraging people from looting during this time.

South Africa (14 July 2021) – Various Taxi Associations throughout South Africa are defending the livelihoods of their commuters by standing alongside the SAPS to prevent further looting and vandelism.

These are some of the most inspiring stories emerging on social media that are celebrating the taxi industry. Major associations, such as the SA National Taxi Council (Santaco) have issued statements encouraging all stakeholders in the industry to take part in preventing looting.

Tshwane

“The taxi industry in Tshwane has taken this position in anticipation of the events in Joburg City spiralling to Tshwane. The leadership of the industry strongly warns those with intentions to loot to desist from any attempts as they will find the industry waiting,” said Abner Tsebe, the chairperson of Santaco.

Gqeberha

Taxi drivers have been driving in convoy to the Old Kragga Kamma Spar and the Lorraine Checkers to show their presence and to discourage looting and acts of violence.

Mbombela

The City of Mbombela shared an annoncement made by the city’s six taxi associations. The associations are joining law enforcement to undertake patroles and prevent unrest in the area.

“The city’s 6 Taxi associations have vowed to defend and protect their livelihoods in the midst of the ongoing sporadic looting and vandalism of property countywide.

It is clear that these acts of vandalism and looting are motivated by hooliganism and criminality.

The city’s Law Enforcement officials in partnership with the associations and other stakeholders have resolved to conduct patrols and isolate these elements in society whose sole intention is to cause havoc for their own selfish reasons.

The city appreciate the leadership provided by the associations and other stakeholders in ensuring that their livelihoods are protected.

City of Mbombela condemns these acts in the strongest terms and will support any initiative that seeks to uphold the rule of law and maintains order.”
