Get ready for free concerts, epic energy and a Heritage Weekend celebration that welcomes the world to Cape Town with this year’s World of Music, Arts and Dance festivities:

 

Cape Town, South Africa (21 September 2023) — The World of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD) is all about bringing the world to Capetonian doorsteps with international and local line-ups—a cultural voyage only fitting for Heritage weekend.

From 23 to 25 September, WOMAD Cape Town will connect the globe in the Mother City, where free concerts will be accessible to everyone and anyone who likes rhythm, music and festivity. Dance performances,vibrant artistry and the sounds of 11 countries will come together alongside Cape Town’s finest local artists.

“We are delighted to welcome WOMAD and the incredible line-up of world artists to Cape Town on the weekend around Heritage Day. This world music celebration, with its diverse array of artists from virtually every continent, is a perfect fit for Cape Town—South Africa’s most vibrant and diverse city.

“It’s also a wonderful occassion for us to show the world a side to our music and dance that they might not be familiar with. WOMAD represents a true journey of discovery of new sounds and cultures, and we can’t wait to add Cape Town’s unique flavour to the WOMAD experience.”—Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.

WOMAD celebrations will take place over the Heritage Day Weekend (23-25 September) between 2pm and 8pm. The free concerts will light up the V&A Waterfront.

And, nteractive Workshops are also on the cards; presented by the international musicians at Ferryman’s Guinness Lounge, Kronedal Music Academy, On the Blocc in Ottery and the Ubuntu Centre, Noordhoek. Not to mention, Langa will also celebrate its 100 Year Anniversary set to be celebrated at the Bridges Music Academy.

But the cultural voyage doesn’t end there! This year, the !Khwa ttu Heritage Day Festival will take place at the !Khwa ttu SAN Heritage Centre in Yzerfontein, celebrating San culture as part of the WOMAD celebrations.

This cultural voyage of significant local importance will take place on Heritage Day (24 September) from 10am to 6pm and will spotlight the musical talents of San dance groups, including Dizu Plaatjies and the epic beats of Drumba Drumming. Additionally, this celebration will also showcase other Indigenous First Nations artists from Australia, Bolivia, Ethiopia and Guinea. Tickets are neccesary for this event.
