The Tongaat Tornado has left families without homes, children without schools and over 1200 people displaced. But, kindness is coming to the rescue:
Tongaat, South Africa (04 June 2024) — Severe weather spells in parts of our country have caused immense stress for many South Africans and devastation for others. While helpers are doing their best to assist those impacted by the Eastern Cape floods, in KwaZulu-Natal, they are stepping up for victims of tornadoes that impacted parts of the province like Tongaat on Monday.
For Tongaat, the damage has been nothing short of heart-wrenching, with Gift of the Givers indicating that over 1200 people have been displaced. With hail and heavy storms joining the mix, multiple reports indicate that the damage has been extensive—ranging from the roofs of homes being ripped off to schools needing to be restored.
The call for community action is spreading across South Africa, and thanks to some incredible and fast acting helpers, relief efforts have already been underway. Gift of the Givers for one, already dispatched teams to the area and thanks to quick community action, supplied essential emergency items for the people there, including over 100 mattresses, over 500 blankets, litres upon litres of bottled water, bulk food and clothes.
But there’s a lot of healing to do and a lot of help needed, so put on your everyday hero cape!
