From the streets of Atlantis to the halls of academia, Tyrone Karolus is proof that laughter and learning go hand-in-hand. Despite facing adversity, this talented teacher and TikTok sensation has captured hearts with his hilarious skits and motivational messages.

Atlantis, South Africa (19 December 2024) – Born and raised in Atlantis, a town grappling with various issues such as crime and violence, Tyrone Karolus chose to pave his own path. A path that would see him not only focus on his education and go on to enrich other young minds but also use social media to spread laughter.

The Atlantis Secondary teacher has two loves that keep his heart beating. Teaching and entertaining his followers on TikTok, where he has won over thousands of fans as “Tyronedinges”.

It all started in 2020, during the lockdown, when a previously shy Tyrone – with a deep desire to entertain – decided to pick up his phone and listen to the little voice inside that said ‘just do it”.

“When I was younger I always thought that I wanted to entertain people. But I didn’t always have the confidence to appear in front of people. I wanted to make an impact on the lives of others because seeing others smile, makes me smile.

“It was during the time of lockdown where I built my presence on social media and I’ve gained a big following ever since,” shares the 23-year-old.

His content includes funny skits, playful challenges, banter and motivational ‘Word of the Day’ videos.

Tyrone has pushed through a troubled background and growing up without a father – something he longed for as a boy growing into a young man trying his level best to steer clear from a road of darkness.

“I’m very grateful to my mother. She stood strong throughout my life. The type of friends I surrounded myself with always motivated me. They were going to study, so I always felt like I had to make a plan to succeed,” says Tyrone.

And succeed he has! Tyrone graduated with his Postgraduate Certificate in Education in Further Education and Teaching Training from Stellenbosch University this month.

An entertainer, teacher and young man who knows all too well about turning life’s lemons into lemonade, Tyrone is just a great guy who is all about empowering his students and making anyone who stumbles across his content have a good laugh.

“Life throws us many curveballs, just keep on keeping on,” a humble Tyrone encourages.
