vuvuzelas

Vuvuzela squad receive a massive festive boost thanks to a highly successful crowdfund, proving that everyone loves people who go above and beyond for their community.

Soweto, South Africa – In October of this year we shared the incredible story about the Vuvuzela guys of Soweto.

The group of men took it upon themselves to walk women from their homes to the nearby transportation hubs. Some wake up at 2 am to get the first wave of women. They also have a uniquely South African call, to let the women know they are ready.

They trumpet on the vuvuzelas to announce their arrival. The women then walk out and are escorted safely to their taxis and buses.

Each of the men is unemployed and have taken up this task to make Soweto a better place for all. The Angel Network decided to raise some money to gift the guys a little something as thanks for going above and beyond.

The Angel Network has been raising funds for the group and after meeting up with the Community Policing Forum at Jabulani police station in Soweto, they learned some incredible facts we missed the first time round.

The Vuvuzela squad is actually 60% female-run and the lead commander of the group is a fierce woman. In speaking with the Captain of the Jabulani police station, The Angel Network learned that since the group was established years ago, the crime rate has steadily decreased year on year.

The Angel Network launched a crowdfund to raise R5,000.00 but it has since hit over R36,000.00. The funds, which are managed by the Angel Network, have been allocated towards a year-end party for the men and women of the vuvuzela squad.

They will be given a portion of the money to host a braai for the 200 plus members. The rest is being used to equip each member with a proper high-visibility vest as well as whistles and other tools needed for the task of protecting commuters.

It doesn’t end there, the Angel Network is now gearing up to raise funds for new boots for each squad member. As they walk long distances each day, reliable and comfortable footwear is essential. Anyone wanting to assist the Angel Network is welcome to message them via Facebook or to call Glynne Goldberg Wolman on 083-777-1621 to discuss donations.
