11 Women who collect waste as sanitation workers for a living experienced a wonderful twist of fate recently—winning over R21 million in their local lottery!
Global (02 August, 2023) — Sometimes there are those wonderful twists of fate where wins go where they’re most needed. Such a twist was the case for 11 women who collect waste for a living in India. Together, they teamed up to purchase just one lucky lottery ticket in the hope that it might change their lives, and the odds nodded in their favour!
According to multiple reports, their wages collecting non-biodegradable goods as sanitation workers equates to around $3 a day (roughly R54). Their recent Kerala Lottery win was over R21 million, something that will undoubtedly change their lives as well as those of their families.
The 11 workers scraped together the money to buy the ticket with some lending money to others to give them a chance to be part of fate’s hand. All agreed that they would share whatever they won—something they’ve done before with far lesser wins.
Each of the women has their own story where this twist of fate in their favour seemed to balance the scales of past hardship. For some, the goal is to spend the winnings on the education of their children. For others, the money will help them rebuild their homes, some of which had been impacted due to Kerala’s 2018 floods.
However, their win won’t see them quit their day jobs as part of the Haritha Karma Sena (a green initiative). Per The News Minute, they shared that they want to continue the hard work to keep their municipality the cleanest of the Malappuram region.
