Through the power of surf therapy, Faieq not only overcame challenges of the social ills he was exposed to as a child, but he is today a successful swimming instructor who is determined to empower other youngsters in his community.

Cape Town, South Africa (30 April 2025) – Having grown up in a community where hope and opportunities were often in short supply, Faieq Samodien was one of many at-risk youth facing the daily challenges of limited resources and social ills.

However, after being introduced to the 9Miles Project in 2013, his life has unfolded in the best way. Here, not only did Faiq explore new skills and connect with inspiring individuals, but he was also given the chance to break free from circumstances that could have easily led him down the wrong path.

Through mentorship, surf therapy, and educational programmes, Faieq gained the skills and confidence to overcome his challenges and circumstances.

Now, Faieq is passionate about empowering the next generation, just as he was empowered. His journey has fuelled a deep desire to give back to the community that shaped him.

One of the ways he’s achieved this is by supporting the organisation that greatly developed him into the qualified swimming instructor, certified freediver, surf coach, and surfboard technician he is today.

Through a BackaBuddy campaign, Faieq has raised over R16,000 for the 9Miles Project to support the very project that transformed his life!

He is just a few thousands short of his overall R18,000 goal and by the looks of things he’ll make it soon enough!

It’s all about paying it forward and providing other young people in his community with similar opportunities to dream big, better navigate life, and build a brighter future – and we couldn’t be prouder of this young man and his great cause!
