Vusimusi Mubika has had a harrowing cancer journey to fight a very aggressive Squamous Cell Carcinoma in his mouth; with the help of others, his journey has changed for the better.
Johannesburg, South Africa (19 October 2021) – For over 18 months, Vusimusi Mubika has been suffering from cancer in his mouth that has gradually gotten worse. He was diagnosed with a very aggressive Squamous Cell Carcinoma in his mouth.
Skin cancer is not usually fatal and can be treated if found early enough. Left to its own devices, the cancer can spread to other parts of the body and cause serious complications. When Vusi first noticed the little sore in his mouth, he sought out medical attention. He was prescribed everything from Panado to an anti-psychotic. Eventually, he was diagnosed with cancer.
Dominique Demetriades and Caitlin Aadnesgaard heard about Vusi, and were moved to help him. They launched a crowdfund to get him private treatment as it was clear Vusi had fallen through the cracks.
Since then, his story has gathered some much-needed attention and Vusi has been able to get the medical care he deserves.
Vusi started a very aggressive round of radiation in August and since then, has undergone 6-weeks of non-stop treatment. He was due to undergo surgery to implant a PEG which would help him eat as his mouth is too sore. Unfortunately, this has been a major setback for his health as he needs to eat to keep his strength up.
Since his 33 radiation sessions, the tumour has shrunk. This is great news! The next step is surgery to repair the damage from the growth.
