Poet Zim

Roy Machamire is a Zimbabwean poet that became inspired by his fellow citizens for their respectable behaviour and wrote a poem to honour them.

Roy Machamire was inspired by the nature in which Robert Mugabe was removed from power. From the dignity offered to the tyrant to the fact that not a single drop of blood was shed nor was there violence and chaos.

For a country that has been in the grips of hunger and a struggling economy, they have already proven that the bounce back will be beautiful. Roy decided to use the inspiration from all that he witnessed and wrote a beautiful poem in honour of his home and the people of Zim.

He credits the people for remaining good even through all the hardship and pain.

Read it below:

I Admire You, by Roy Machamire:

I know of a country,

That shines above the tallest buildings and the highest mountains,

I know of a country that did the unthinkable,

A coup with no blood shed,

I know of a country

That had a coup where a sitting president was treated like a sitting a president with dignity and respect,

I know of a country,

Where the old and the young came together from all walks of life with their differences set aside,

I know of a country,

That policed themselves and marched in the streets in solidarity with a simple wish that was rooted and justified from many years of suffering,

I know of a country,

That wished for a new day, and a new leadership with a new perspective,

I know of a country,

That went through severe poverty, social and economic injustice,

I know of a country,

That had every reason to pick up guns and redefine their future,

But they didn’t. They couldn’t!

For that’s not who they are.

I know of a country,

That is so peaceful, so loving, and so full of class.

I know of a country,

That defines resilience better than a rubber band,

I know of a country

That went to a bank to withdraw their own hard earned money and there was no money in the bank,

I know of a country,

That was and is so educated and full of natural resources, and yet there were no jobs for its own people,

I know of a country,

That wasn’t paid for their work, and the rich got richer at the expense of the poor.

I know of a country,

That had no healthcare infrastructure to take care of its own people when in need.

I know of a country,

That loves and welcomes all people from different nations, ethnic and religious backgrounds,

I know of a country

With the people I will forever admire, the people of Zimbabwe.
