15-year-old Maria King has committed the month of July to an important challenge – running 155km to raise awareness (and pads) in the fight against period poverty in her community.

Durban, South Africa (25 July 2024) – Maria King is running 5km each day to raise awareness and collect sanitary pads to help tackle period poverty. She is running a total of 155km for the 31 days of July 2024.

Maria shared on her social media that she has always had a passion for women’s rights and finding out that period poverty plays such a major role in setting women back, she is hoping to take on the challenge to end period poverty in her community.

“I’m hoping what I am doing can create more awareness for this topic, bring some change and even influence other people to do the same.” – Maria King.

Maria invites people to put on some pink and join her. Her next participation run will be on July 26th at 5 a.m. You can find the details here.

“I want to start creating an awareness campaign focusing on young girls who miss days of school because they cannot afford sanitary products. The impact of this affects their education. Did you know that in South Africa up to 7 million girls miss 25% of their school year beacuse of this.

So what am I doing? Well I would like to raise awareness and collect sanitary products so young girls are able to attend school.”

Maria runs at different times each day, so be sure to follow her Instagram to support her and find out where to drop off your donations.
