A Cape clawless otter has been spotted making regular appearances in Plett!

Plettenberg Bay, South Africa (13 August 2026) – Affectionately called Oscar, a Cape clawless otter has reportedly been exploring Plett’s shoreline recently, where he enjoys hunting for prey, including crabs, fish, crayfish, frogs and, occasionally, squid and other small marine animals.

“He’s back! Plettenberg Bay’s favourite otter spotted on his morning forage,” shares local Murray Luscombe on Facebook, along with a video of his recent Oscar sighting.

“Oscar, as we’ve come to call him, surprised us this morning by bringing up an octopus and around 15 crabs for breakfast. He swam past Offshore Adventures and Beacon Island Resort en route to the ocean. So awesome sitting quietly, allowing him to do his natural thing and seeing how incredibly efficiently he hunts.”

While otters are most commonly found near rivers, dams and estuaries, they are also known to explore sheltered coastlines. For example, in Kommetjie, a group of internet-famous otters regularly take dips in a local family’s pool that overlooks their marine territory.

In Plett, rivers, estuaries, wetlands and the coastline are all connected, allowing otters to move freely between these habitats.

If you spot an otter in the wild, try not to disrupt its natural behaviour. Stay at least 20–30 metres away where possible, and use your camera’s zoom function if you’d like a closer look instead of approaching it. If you have dogs with you, leash them immediately and keep them well away from the otter.
