When the seeds teachers plant in the classroom eventually come back to nourish them! In a proud full-circle moment, a teacher recently found herself receiving top-tier care at a hospital where her former student now sits in top management.
Bellville, South Africa (25 August 2026) – Teachers shape us and the paths we end up taking in profound ways. They are the ones who notice when we’re struggling before we even admit it to ourselves, and the ones who see a spark in us long before we learn how to light it.
Most of us can point back to at least one classroom where a single encouraging word, a tough lesson, or just feeling truly heard changed our trajectory.
Recently, one teacher, Gogo Nkazimlo Naledi Khau, got to witness and experience how a student she taught many years ago went on not only to succeed but to rise to the top management of a hospital she was recently admitted to.
While in her hospital bed at Melomed Bellville, Khau had the most beautiful surprise! She met one of her former learners, Okuhle Mbenya, from Masonwabe Primary School in Delft, from years ago.
“She is now part of the top management at Melomed Bellville, and she came to see me with the most beautiful flowers and chocolates,” Khau said.

Beaming with pride at how far her past learner had come, Khau was touched to know she played a part in Okuhle’s journey and career – a career that was now ensuring she received the best healthcare she required.
“Okuhle wam (My Okuhle), I cannot explain how proud and emotional I felt. Seeing a former learner grow into such a successful and professional woman is truly one of the greatest rewards of being a teacher,” expressed the emotional educator.
Khau further thanked Okuhle for both the beautiful gesture and for remembering her long after she had left school.
“You have reminded me that the impact we make as teachers stays with our learners long after they leave our classrooms.”
Teachers really are the gems whose guidance stays with us, and whose influence shapes the people we go on to become.
