Jeremy Mansfield lived his life to the fullest, leaving behind a legacy that will live on not only in the lives of his loved ones but in all those who loved and supported him throughout his radio career.
Johannesburg, South Africa (31 October 2022) – Today South Africa mourns and pays tribute to Jeremy Mansfield. The radio legend lost his battle against stage 4 liver cancer.
Mansfield started his broadcasting career at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, moving on to Capitol 604 in Durban. In 1990, Mansfield joined 702 Talk Radio, and in 1996 he finally moved to Highveld Stereo, launching what was to be the hugely popular Rude Awakening breakfast show.
In 2009, Mansfield announced that he had been diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, for which he announced he was undergoing treatment, and a year later left the station.
But in 2018, he returned as the host of Hot 91.9FM’s all-new morning show ‘Mansfield in the Morning’, a move that saw him reunited with long-time partner in crime Sam Cowen and the team of Simon Hill, John Walland, Karabo Yibe and award-winning producer, Will Scott.
Mansfield brought his unique brand of humour, talkability, commentary and, opinions to radio, all to the delight of listeners. His passion for community enrichment was well known, and this formed an integral part of the show.
He left Hot 91.9FM in February 2021 and launched his own show using YouTube, called Mansfield2day. He was then diagnosed with liver cancer in January 2022 after his previous battle with leukaemia. Doctors confirmed he had stage 4 cancer, and he was put on treatment immediately. Just months later, Jeremy Mansfield confirmed his cancer was terminal and the only treatment options left, were palliative care.
He dedicated the time he had left, to having as much fun as possible and working his way through his bucket list.
His longtime friend and colleague Samantha Cowen shared the news about the devastating loss via Facebook this morning. Her words moved us to tears!
“This morning a light went out in the world. Jeremy Mansfield passed away just before dawn. He died peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends and boundless love.

Jeremy lived large, he didn’t know how to do small. He loved hard, laughed loud and managed to combine mischief and mayhem with heart and soul. The city was brighter and lighter with him on the airwaves, he changed lives every day. When he wasn’t raising millions for charity, he was raising fresh hell!
Under a naughty exterior Jeremy had a huge soft heart. A lot of people got to see and hear that over the radio but he saved his vulnerability for a select few. He was determined that the world be a better and shinier and funnier place and he drove the road to that destination at 1000 miles an hour with no rear view mirror, all of the rest of us clinging on for dear life!
We will miss him horribly. The family is devastated and is asking for privacy during this time.
