A ‘hop-less’ situation has turned into a hopeful one for an injured Guttural Toad called Sir Anthony Hop-kins thanks to the human heroes in his corner!
Springs, South Africa (29 September 2026) – A caring rescuer raced to Val De Grace CREW Animal Hospital recently when a Guttural Toad had been hurt in an electric gate motor incident.
Once he arrived there, X-rays revealed damage to his foot and lower hindlimb. Thankfully, Dr Rob Campbell considered it fixable with surgery.
The rescuer, having already made the trip to the animal hospital for the tiny toad, kindly offered to cover a portion of the costs for the procedure.
“Suddenly, this little fellow had a lot going for him! Dr Campbell was more than happy to help his diminutive patient, and soon Sir Anthony Hop-kins was booked for surgery.”
The operation went well, and Sir Anthony now has the vet’s full attention while he comes round. The South African Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, which was called in to help find a path forward for the patient, says the vet’s skill is a big part of why so many of its animals get a fighting chance.
Rehabber Leanne Hezlett will be Sir Anthony’s next hop for the next few weeks.
“That means a carefully managed environment while his surgical site heals, appropriate temperature regulation, good hygiene and, naturally, a suitable supply of food to keep an amphibian of such distinguished proportions content.” the center shares.
When enough time has passed, he’ll head back to Dr Campbell for more X-rays to check how the bones have knitted together.
“If it all looks good, his rehabilitation can gradually progress .. more space, more movement and, eventually, a gentle return to the sort of life a Guttural Toad ought to be living.”
