Fans in the United States showed their support for the South African international, offering a heartwarming reminder that Mzansi’s football community stretches far beyond its borders.

Chicago, USA (12 October 2026) – Thousands of kilometres from home, Mbekezeli Mbokazi is getting a reminder that South African football fans are never too far away.

The Chicago Fire defender was shown plenty of love by South Africans in the United States following his side’s 2–1 victory over New York City FC at Soldier Field on Saturday.

Footage of the supporters captures the pride and excitement, with fans singing for the South African international, proudly wearing the country’s colours and showing their support for the young defender. There were also moments of fan interaction, including signed shirts.

It is a special sight for any player representing South Africa abroad. While moving to a new country and competing in a different league comes with its own challenges, support from home can make the experience that much more meaningful.

Mbokazi joined Chicago Fire from Orlando Pirates in December 2025, taking the next step in his career by moving to Major League Soccer in the United States.

And he is not the only South African making his mark at the club, with fellow countryman Puso Dithejane also part of the Chicago Fire setup.

The club has already attracted interest from South African supporters since Mbokazi’s arrival, with fans following his progress and finding new reasons to keep an eye on the team.

Saturday’s match provided another opportunity for that connection to shine. Chicago came from behind to beat New York City FC, with Anton Salétros equalising before Maren Haile-Selassie scored the winner in the 87th minute.

But beyond the result, the scenes of South African supporters rallying behind Mbokazi offered a reminder of how football connects people across borders.
