Hundreds of supporters braved the early morning chill at OR Tambo International Airport to celebrate South Africa’s history-making FIFA World Cup campaign.

Johannesburg, South Africa (02 July 2026) – The sun had barely risen when the cheers started.

Despite the early morning chill, hundreds of South African football fans gathered at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday to give Bafana Bafana the welcome they had earned after their historic FIFA World Cup campaign.

Supporters draped in the green and gold arrived with flags, jerseys, vuvuzelas and songs, turning the airport arrivals hall into a celebration as they waited for the national team to return home.

The reception came after Bafana Bafana captured the nation’s pride by reaching the knockout stages of a FIFA World Cup, a milestone that has reignited excitement around local football.

Players and members of the technical team were greeted with loud applause, chants and heartfelt messages of appreciation from supporters on social media.

The celebrations weren’t limited to fans. Members of the media were also out in full force, documenting the emotional homecoming as the team reunited with loved ones and soaked in the appreciation from the public.

While their World Cup journey may have come to an end, the reception at OR Tambo showed just how much the squad’s achievements resonated with South Africans. The World Cup campaign may be over, but judging by these scenes, Bafana Bafana have returned home as heroes.
