The Kungwini Welfare Organisation found themselves facing rising waters during a recent rainfall and asked their supporters for help with sandbags to divert the flash flood.
Centurion, South Africa (11 November 2020) – Centurion often faces flooding during massive Gauteng storms and yesterday was one of those days. The heavens opened and poured harder than it has all season, this left people at the Kungwini Welfare Organisation scrambling to prevent the rising water from damaging their building.
The Kungwini Welfare Organisation supports adults with physical and mental disabilities. They started in 1983, becoming a fully-fledged non-profit in 2002.
Currently, the organisation is running a Christmas campaign where the residents they support send out their wishlists and the public help make the wishes come true.
While it was business as usual yesterday, the sudden and very heavy rainfall led to a small flash flood that overtook their premises very quickly.
The team quickly grabbed buckets and brooms and started working to get the water out of the building. It wasn’t working, they needed to divert the flow of water so they took to social media asking everyone to donate sandbags.
“We had a flash flood at Kungwini Welfare Organisation where all staff took hands, brooms, blankets to get water out our hallways and offices.
Properly filled and placed sandbags can act as a barrier to divert moving water around, instead of through buildings”
Thankfully people heard the call and donated sandbags as well as funds to help the organisation.
