The Good Things Guy team will be popping in and out of Cape Town over the next two months and we feel we need to take aid to our colleagues, friends and family. These are the perfect thank you gifts for anyone affected by the drought.
When staying at someones home, it is always acceptable and appreciated to take a ‘thank you for hosting me’ gift. The standards are flowers, chocolates and wine but after seeing our travel plans for the next 2-months, we brainstormed better alternatives to take with us.
The drought is causing havoc so we came up with some meaningful gifts to help friends and family out while staying with them plus some tips for while you are there.
“The excellence of a gift lies in its appropriateness rather than in its value.” – Charles Dudley Warner
Gift Ideas for drought-stricken friends and family.
- Take bottled water with you as your carry-on. We plan to take 5-litre bottles as our carry-on and gifting them to our hosts.
- Buy dry shampoo, hand sanitiser, makeup removing water and anti-bacterial wipes, take a set for yourself and a set as a gift to your host. Any type of hygiene product that doesn’t require water is great.
- A filtered water bottle.
- Make a donation of water in their name to an animal shelter.
Tips for before you travel and for during your stay.
- Wash your hair and shave the morning you fly out. This will give you at least 2 days before you need to do it again.
- Call ahead and ask what the families water routine is so that you can fit right into it.
- Take your own towel and wash it when you get back home.
- Pack enough so that you do not need to do any washing and can take it back home to wash it.
- Do not order tap water from a restaurant, rather pay for the bottled option.
- Re-use your mug or water glass multiple times in one day to prevent washing dishes as frequently.
- Shower directly after someone so no waiting is required for water to get warm.

Common sense, but excellent to read these tips! I did not think I could learn something new!
