South Africa finished top of Pool A after an eight-try victory over Wales, keeping their title defence alive as attention turns to the knockout rounds.

Tbilisi, Georgia (08 July 2026) – The Junior Springboks are one step closer to defending their World Rugby U20 Championship crown after powering into the semi-finals with an entertaining 52-33 victory over Wales

Eight South African tries secured top spot in Pool A and kept the title defence firmly on course, although the youngsters will know they’ll need to tighten up defensively before next week’s knockout clash.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing early on. Wales burst out of the blocks, scoring two converted tries inside the opening 10 minutes to put the defending champions under immediate pressure. But the Junior Boks responded exactly how champions do.

Hendre Schoeman got the comeback underway after a dominant scrum, before Ethan Adams finished off a brilliant attacking move that started with a clever kick ahead and an assist from Yaqeen Ahmed. Ahmed added both conversions to level matters before captain Siphosethu Mnebelele crashed over to hand South Africa the lead.

With Wales reduced to 14 men after a yellow card, Heinrich Theron crossed from a driving maul to give the Junior Boks a healthy 26-14 advantage at the break.

South Africa picked up where they left off after half-time as Risima Khosa crossed for another superb try to push the lead beyond 30 points.

The Junior Boks always seemed to have another answer. Despite a few nervy moments late in the match and Wales grabbing a consolation score, the result was never seriously in doubt as the Junior Boks celebrated another impressive attacking display.

With three wins from three in the pool stages, South Africa heads into the semi-finals full of confidence. They’ll be pleased with the 52 points scored, but equally aware that polishing the finer details.
