Today, a man who went invisible to the system for decades finally holds the piece of plastic that proves he exists.
Eastern Cape, South Africa (27 January 2026) – After a lifetime of struggle, Siximba Sontlaba has officially received his first South African identity document at the age of 68!
For decades, he lived without recognition as a citizen, unable to access basic rights and services.
His journey toward registration began in 2016 and, after nearly ten years of persistence, finally reached a breakthrough in 2025 when the family sought support from One to One Africa through Maliviwe Ngcala, one of the organisation’s dedicated Health Ambassadors.
Through relentless advocacy, coordinated teamwork, and commitment, One to One Africa worked alongside the family to navigate systemic barriers until this life-changing victory was secured.
Executive Director, Gqibelo Dandala, said the historic milestone was a deeply moving and affirming moment for everyone at One to One Africa.
“Citizenship is more than a document. It is dignity, access, and belonging. To see a 68-year-old finally recognised after years of struggle reminds us why we do this work.”
With his ID now in hand, the elated Sontlaba is taking his next step toward stability – heading to SASSA to apply for his rightful grant, this time with a smile and renewed hope.
“One to One Africa remains steadfast in its mission to stand with individuals and families who face systemic exclusion, ensuring that every person can access essential services and claim their rightful place in society,” concludes Dandala.
