Kings Park Stadium has honoured rugby legend James Small, by opening an area conceptualised by the South African icon!
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (4 February 2020) – The Small Zone was conceptualised in memory of James Small, who’s initial vision it was to develop an area for family and children to enjoy rugby together.
Small (born 10 February 1969) was a former South African rugby union footballer who played on the wing for the Springboks.
His international debut was against the All Blacks in 1992, and he made his final appearance against Scotland in 1997. In that final test match, he scored his 20th try, becoming the leading Springbok try scorer, eclipsing Danie Gerber’s record. He was also the leading try-scorer in the 1996 Super 12 season.
Small passed away on the 10th of July 2019 after succumbing to a heart attack.
Sharks CEO, Ed Coetzee, wanted to honour Small’s memory and fulfil his vision, so he commissioned the creation of family-friendly area at Jonsson Kings Park Stadium.
The Small Zone will include a variety of family and kid-friendly activities including:
- Pool and slides
- A Gaming Room
- A creche (for kids under the age of 6)
- A coffee shop
- Inflatable rides
- Sand Pit
