The Berlin Marathon’s “race day routine” video captured South Africans singing Shosholoza and flying the flag in Germany.
Berlin, Germany (29 September 2026) – There are few things that will make South Africans instantly feel at home quite like hearing Shosholoza, even when you’re thousands of kilometres away.
That was exactly the energy coming from a group of South African runners ahead of this year’s Berlin Marathon, after the official Berlin Marathon Instagram page captured them getting into the race-day spirit with a very familiar soundtrack.
The video, shared as part of the marathon’s “What is your race day routine?” series, shows the South Africans proudly singing Shosholoza while getting ready to take on one of the biggest races on the global running calendar.
And they certainly weren’t hiding where they came from.
South African flags were proudly on display, with runners dressed in Mzansi gear as they sang together and soaked up the atmosphere ahead of the 42.2km challenge.
The BMW Berlin Marathon took place on Sunday, 27 September, attracting more than 56 000 runners to the German capital. It is one of the Abbott World Marathon Majors and remains one of the sport’s most prestigious races.

The marathon is also about the thousands of everyday runners who travel from around the world to experience the race.
And for this group of South Africans, their race-day routine came with a soundtrack that could only be Mzansi.
Flags out. Voices up. Shosholoza playing.
