After a memorable UK tour filled with joyful performances and proud moments, the Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble has returned home inspired to keep nurturing young talent and sharing music that uplifts communities.

Soweto, South Africa (28 August 2026) – Founded by violist Rosemary Nalden, the Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble has spent decades turning young talent from Diepkloof into world-class string performers.

The incredibly talented ensemble recently partnered with the UK-based, award-winning chamber group Ensemble Hesperi, for a collaborative concert series titled Baroque Bridges. Supported by the Continuo Foundation, the cross-continental performances brought together Baroque masterpieces, including works by J.S. Bach, Telemann, Rameau and Joseph Bologne, performed alongside harpsichord and recorder.

In keeping with their Mzansi roots and true to Buskaid tradition, the classical programmes ended on a joyful note with high-energy arrangements of traditional African township Kwela music, complete with full ensemble choreography and dance!

The joint initiative formed part of Buskaid’s UK tour, which included stops at iconic venues such as St Giles Cripplegate in London, Minterne House in Dorset and the Foundling Museum.

With hearts full and spirits lifted after a thrilling couple of weeks abroad performing to packed audiences, collaborating with world-class Ensemble Hesperi, and leading training workshops that showcased the depth of talent nurtured at the Buskaid Music School, the Ensemble returns to where it all began: its vibrant Music School in Diepkloof, Soweto.

“The students are excited to reconnect with their peers, dive back into daily teaching and rehearsals, and continue the hard work that fuels Buskaid’s unique blend of discipline, creativity and excellence,” Buskaid shared in a post.

Buskaid extends its appreciation to Continuo Foundation, European String Teachers Association (ESTA UK) and everyone who bought a ticket to their concerts for the support that made this possible.

Energised by the experiences gained abroad, the Ensemble steps into its next chapter ready to grow, teach and continue performing music that transforms lives.

From Soweto to the world! The talent of Mzansi’s youth continues to shine and prove that when dedication meets opportunity, music can open doors and lift communities.
