South Africa kicks off their 2026 World Cup campaign against Mexico once more, revisiting a familiar stage in a Group A encounter.
Washington DC, United States of America (08 December 2025) – Déjà Vu for Bafana Bafana as they open 2026 World Cup against Mexico! It feels a bit like stepping back in time. Only this time at Azteca Stadium. Sixteen years after South Africa’s 2010 World Cup opener ended in a draw against Mexico, Bafana Bafana will face the same opponents in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This time, though, the stakes are higher, the tournament bigger, and the challenge even tougher.
The 2026 World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada from 11 June to 19 July, will be the first with a 48-team format, featuring 12 groups of four. Bafana Bafana find themselves in Group A alongside Mexico, the Republic of Korea, and a yet-to-be-confirmed team, following the draw in Washington, DC on Friday.

While the match against Mexico has sparked excitement among fans, coach Hugo Broos has cautioned that the opener won’t be a walk in the park. Denmark’s possible inclusion in the group makes the challenge even trickier.
South Africa returns to the World Cup stage after missing the past tournaments, with the memory of the 2010 opener still fresh for many. The match in 2026 promises to bring a fresh mix of nerves and excitement.
For Bafana fans, the excitement is tangible. History meets opportunity as the team steps back onto the global stage, ready to show that while the opponents may be familiar, the 2026 squad has its own story to write. It’s déjà vu, but with hope of results being different, and South Africa will look to go further this time.
