Henri Schoeman has just claimed the gold medal for the men’s triathlon at the Commonwealth Games hosted at the Gold Coast in Australia.
Henri Schoeman has just won South Africa’s first gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games which are being hosted at the Gold Coast in Australia.
The win was a victory after achieving the third place spot behind Alistair and Jonny Brownlee at the 2016 Olympics. Henri got ahead of the triathlete brothers on the running leg this time and won it in 52min 31sec, seven seconds ahead of Australia’s triathlete Jacob Birtwhistle.
The race up to his win was a tense one. Henri lost a few places during the transition from swimming to cycling but maintained a top 5 spot throughout the entire triathlon. It was during the final lap of the run that he sprinted into first and earned the gold.
Richard Murray and Wian Sullwald also represented South Africa in the men’s race and have finished 6th and 20th respectively.
Henri Schoeman shared a few photos of his arrival at the games and how he was settling in.

Team South Africa has now joined Bermuda and Malaysia in joint first on the medal standings having earned one gold each.
There are several other sportsmen and women representing Team South Africa at the games. Our biggest event will be the Blitzboks defending their titles as the HSBC Sevens World Series champions and defending Commonwealth Games champions.
As well as Caster Semenya racing for gold.
Whatever the outcome, South Africa stands behind every single team member at the games. We cannot wait to share more of the good news with you.
