After a strong 2025 season, Eddie Kruger and the Madibaz squad aim to kick off 2026 on a high note as they chase Varsity Shield glory.
South Africa (08 February 2026) – Mandela University’s Madibaz rugby team is gearing up for the 2026 FNB Varsity Shield, and new captain Eddie Kruger is at the helm, bringing experience to the side.
Last season, the team narrowly missed promotion to the Varsity Cup after a dramatic 24-21 playoff defeat to UJ, finishing as runners-up in a campaign that saw them shine in the semifinals and finish second in the log.
Eddie reflected, recalling his journey from the Young Guns in 2022 to becoming a key player in the first XV.
“My game has developed a lot over the years. I feel far more comfortable now in understanding how a system should be played and my role within it.”
The 22-year-old credits coach David Manuel and the management staff for his growth both on and off the field. His leadership philosophy is rooted in service rather than status.
“It’s an honour and a privilege to lead this team. My philosophy is simple, a leader plays for those around him,” he said. “It’s about being willing to fight for and with your teammates.”
Eddie has led by example through a demanding pre-season that included intensive training camps and sacrifices away from family and friends. The effort has created an “exciting environment” with a mix of young talent and seasoned players.
Coach David Manuel emphasised that the Madibaz must focus on execution, discipline, and alignment within the squad.
“The competition among the teams has become very tight; it’s getting better and better each year.”
He also pointed to the continuity in the forward pack and the technical awareness of each player as vital for success this season. The Madibaz kick off their campaign on the road against a formidable CPUT side in Cape Town on February 13. Eddie and his teammates are ready to take on the challenge.
“We work together for the benefit of the team. It’s about holding each other accountable and making sure we’re aligned in everything.”
