Fitness fans in Cape Town took their spin class to a whole new level at a Cycle for Change Spinathon, where they pedalled to help fund permanent indoor cycling studios for Velokhaya Cycling Academy and Songezo’s Cycling Academy.

Cape Town, South Africa (18 September 2025) – What’s better than an adrenaline-pumping spin class? One where every push and pedal is for a purpose!

Fitness enthusiasts and changemakers came together for a high-energy, purpose-driven day of spinning as Matrix Fitness South Africa hosted its inaugural Cycle for Change Spinathon last Saturday. Every pedal stroke powered the initiative to provide permanent indoor cycling studios at Velokhaya Cycling Academy and Songezo’s Cycling Academy in Cape Town.

These academies play a vital role in empowering young people with essential skills and resources, helping them navigate challenging environments and build a brighter future.

Velokhaya Cycling Academy in Khayelistha supports youth through cycling, education, and mentoring. For over 20 years, this organisation has been more than an academy. It’s been a space where young people grow strong – on and off the bike. Where discipline meets dreams, challenges are faced and overcome and where freedom is built every day through hard work, courage, and community.

In the township of Masiphumelele, Songezo’s Cycling Academy offers the youth population an opportunity to participate in cycling as a much-needed recreational activity. The sport exposes them to higher levels of competition, bicycle maintenance and many general life skills, including support with their education, that help them in their future roles in the labour market.

The recently held Spinathon was graced by corporate teams and individuals who participated in the cycling event either pedalling in 20-minute spinathon relays or cheering on Velokhaya and Songezo Cycling Academy riders, to raise funds for a game-changing upgrade.

The initiative aimed to supply both academies with indoor cycling facilities, with Matrix ICR50 Limited Edition bikes. The upgrade and installations are set to rev up this year, empowering both academies to take their cycling programmes to the next level – ultimately empowering young people and building brighter futures!
