Honouring Lucas Radebe: Proud parents are still naming their kids after him!

People around the globe are taking to social media to share how they have named their kids after soccer icon, Lucas Radebe!

Johannesburg, South Africa – South African and UK footballer Lucas Radebe is so popular that even now, 14 years after officially retiring, fans around the world are still naming their children after him!

Radebe (born 12 April 1969) is a Global former footballer who played primarily as a centre-back.

He began playing in South Africa with Kaizer Chiefs, before transferring to Leeds United, where he played 256 matches for the Yorkshire side. During his spells at these clubs, he picked up the nicknames “Rhoo” and “The Chief” and also went on to become captain of the UK team.

But even today, fans of “The Chief” have not forgotten him and many babies being born in 2019 are being named after the former Leeds United captain!

On Sunday Radebe’s Twitter was busy as he was responding to tweets from happy fathers who wanted the soccer star that they had named their kids after him.

George Bull, the dad that got it all kicked off, tweeted that his son born on Friday is named after Radebe.

The soccer star was tagged in the tweet, so responded, “Wow, brilliant hope all is well.”

And that is when many other Twitter users added their “Lucas” stories to the thread.

“I literally had the same idea, but we had a girl on July 13th! Mrs wouldn’t let me have a little girl called Lucas.” – Matty Holloway

“My girl had Luca as a middle name. My choice.” – Nikki Crick

“This is Lucas names after the chief born the same year Lucas retired #MOT#LUFC.” – Liam Anderson

“Its defo a Leeds fan thing my lad Lucas! Again named after Lucas Radebe! Middle names are James and Allan, wonder where them names come from?” – Liam Quantock

“Here’s my Lucas! Who knew that the Chief would influence so many when choosing baby names.” – Stuart Clark

Radebe has been very humble in his response to the dedication and has been congratulating all the men on their children, hoping to meet them soon.
