South Africa continues its incredible run of sporting triumphs, with local hero Luke Thompsson adding another glorious chapter! The 21-year-old Durban surfer secured a historic win in the dying minutes of the Ballito Pro Challenger Series.
Ballito, South Africa (07 July 2025) – There is just no stopping the epic wave of South African sports glory, and honestly, we’re here for every riveting moment!
One of the latest sports heroes to wave South Africa’s flag high was Durban wave rider, Luke Thompsson, who made history in a thrilling conclusion to the 2025 Ballito Pro over the weekend, winning the Challenger Series.
A day of excellent surfing conditions led to a thrilling final, during which Thompson’s large crowd of supporters witnessed him secure victory against George Pittar with only two minutes remaining, placing him at the top of the podium, World Surf League reports.
The 21-year-old surfer’s triumph places him in the third position on the Challenger Series rankings and makes him the first South African to win in Ballito Pro since CT veteran Jordy Smith in 2017.
An emotional Thompsson was embraced by fellow South African surfers when he got back to the beach, before being carried through a jubilant crowd, The Citizen shares.
“It’s a dream come true to win in front of a South African crowd here,” said Thompson.
“It’s been a crazy couple of days, and the support has been incredible from everyone. I’m so proud to be a South African.”
