South African and international sprinters came together for thrilling races, with big names and rising stars lighting up the Simbine Curro Classic Shootout this past weekend.

Pretoria, South Africa (16 February 2026) – While many were celebrating Valentine’s Day with chocolates and flowers on Saturday, South Africa’s track stars were making their own kind of excitement on the track at the Simbine Curro Classic Shootout.

The Simbine Curro Classic Shootout delivered excitement and high-calibre competition as South Africa’s top athletes were joined by international contenders last weekend. The second leg of the annual Classic Shootout series, held in conjunction with the Curro Podium Grand Finale at Pilditch Stadium, showcased eight events across two days, with athletes from South Africa, Nigeria, Botswana, Germany, Namibia, Eswatini, and the Democratic Republic of Congo taking to the track.

The action kicked off with the men’s and women’s 60m heats and finals, featuring seasoned sprinters like Tamzin Thomas, a former South African 100m and 200m champion.

But wait, there’s more! Local challengers, including Chane Kok and long jump medalist Danielle Nolte, added intrigue to the early races.

Again, wait, there’s more! One of the standout performers? 18-year-old Rume Burger, national senior 200m champion, shone once again, finishing as runner-up just behind Tuks’ Jada van Staden. Her performance broke the U20 women’s national best by a clear margin of 37.64, set in Potchefstroom in 2024, proving that her talent continues to rise with each race.

Once again, wait, there’s more! Fans were also treated to veteran athletes like Precious Molepo, Banele Shabangu, and hurdles specialist Tumi Ramokgopa, who added experience and depth to the field. Akani Simbine’s name once again brought together an impressive mix of established stars and emerging sprinters.
