Six ParaSurfers from the Roxy Davis Foundation have earned the opportunity to surf at the South African Para Surfing Championships in Durban.

Cape Town, South Africa (18 July 2022) – The Roxy Davis Foundation was founded by nine times South African surfing champion Roxy Davis, a proudly ‘Capetonian’, having grown up in Kommetjie! The foundation was formed in January 2019 with a passion for surfing, the ocean and its many great benefits.

Roxy is the first individual to represent South Africa in all three disciplines of shortboard surfing, longboard surfing and stand-up paddleboard surfing, as well as serving as a National Team Manager and Surf Coach.

Roxy leads a professional surf coaching team consisting of over 100 instructors, some of which are also trained as Adaptive Surf coaches. The foundation uses surfing as a means of therapy for people from all backgrounds.

The foundation has been working within the ParaSurfing realm for some time, and recently, a team of six surfers earned their place to compete at the South African Para Surfing Championships in Durban.

The foundation is raising funds to get the team from Cape Town to Durban at the end of the month for the competition. It runs from the 29th to the 31st of July 2022.

They need to raise a total of R150,000 to get the whole team across. Thankfully, they have managed to find sponsors for two of the six surfers so far. Now they hope to raise enough to get the rest of the team to the championship. This will be the first time each of these ParaSurfers is competing at a competition so the opportunity is a big one!

The team is made up of Thando, Emile, Diego, Raemondo, Tina and Cwenga. Each surfer has a special way they have adapted to surfing. They have all only surfed a total of 10 times, showing just how much promise they have as South African representatives in para surfing.

“These six young surfers are the definition of inspiration. They do not let anyone define them by their abilities or where they come from. These Western Province Team members have broken boundaries already as they have only surfed ten times. Imagine what they will do during and after this challenging journey? This opportunity will shape these future young leaders and ensure inclusion is the norm everywhere in South Africa.” – Fiona Sander

The money needed will cover the following:

  • Assisted airport transfers, air travel and extra baggage R60k
  • Subsistence R20k
  • Ability-friendly accommodation R45k
  • Adapted surfboards, wetsuits, lifejackets R15k
  • Medical support R10k
