I’ve very excited. It’s great to be able to play international indoor cricket again. The last time we played international cricket was at the Masters in Cape Town in 2019. It feels good to be back.

Western Cape, South Africa (25 March 2022) – A Cape Town indoor cricketer will be hoping to make his country proud when he represents his country at the Indoor Tri-Series in Dubai, the first-ever international triangular series for the sport.

Forty-one-year-old Rejean Damon from Brackenfell – who plays in the Masters side – will be setting off this week for the series between South Africa, England and the Emirates. The event starts on March 26 and will run until April 1.

Damon is the only player from Cape Town, with the rest of the squad mostly Gauteng-based.

“I’ve very excited. It’s great to be able to play international cricket again. The last time we played international cricket was at the Masters in Cape Town in 2019. It feels good to be back,” he says.

The self-funded squad of 11 will be heading off this Thursday.

“We’ve had to raise the money ourselves and find sponsors who will cover some of the costs,” says Damon. The squad will also be taking along what they hope with be a secret weapon – a stash of Ella coffee. The uniquely South African product is a blend of premium espresso and milk that is drunk straight up as a shot.

“I tried one of the coffees before a match recently, and it really gave us a boost, so I asked the company whether we’d be able to take some with us.”

Damon is no stranger to the sport and has played indoor cricket since he was about seven. He also played against India in 2011 for the SA Open Side. Despite this, he still gets a thrill competing.

“It’s always an honour to play for South Africa and to make your family proud,” he says.
