South African Paralympic swimmer Kat Swanepoel has dedicated the month of May to beating MS by swimming for a cause that isn’t just close to her heart but has profoundly impacted every aspect of her life.
Johannesburg, South Africa (07 May 2025) – Decorated South African Paralympic swimmer Katherine “Kat” Swanepoel has dived into many pools for various competitions, ranking from provincial, national and international levels, each experience fueling her passion as an inspiring athlete who defies limits.
Now, the double world champion is channelling her incredible passion and resilience into a deeply personal and new challenge by taking on the responsibility to swim for her disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
“MS might have affected every single aspect of my life, rerouted my hopes and dreams, changed my path and brought unimaginable challenges, but it has not stopped me moving,” Kat shares.
As part of the May 50K fundraising initiative, Kat has signed up to swim 50km to raise both awareness and much-needed funds for both research and support of people living with MS.
“I will be taking on 50km throughout May and leaving my limits behind to increase funding for vital MS research worldwide, improve access to effective treatment and support for everyone, no matter where they live,” she says.
Having lived with this disease, Kat knows firsthand the challenges and limitations it brings but has refused to let it define her. Now, she is determined to use her platform to help others thrive.
“There are over 2.8 million people living with MS, and over 5000 living in South Africa. Research and global action are the keys to changing the future of MS, so I’ve accepted the May 50K challenge to change lives.”
“Those who know me know how MS has drastically affected my life. Your support means the world to me and others and will help to pave the way to a future where we can find a cure for this disease,” Kat shares.
She is calling on anyone and everyone to contribute towards her mission by donating to her May 50K challenge to beat and leave MS behind.
