Durban teen Sarah McLaren gears up to make waves at the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships in Romania.
Otopeni, Romania (20 August 2025)- Sarah McLaren is juggling the stress of matric trial exams with the excitement of representing South Africa on the international stage. From 19 to 24 August 2025, the grade 12 Durban Girls’ College learner Sarah will compete in the 100m and 200m breaststroke events at the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships in Otopeni, Romania, following her bronze medal performance at the Africa Junior Champs in May.
For Sarah, swimming has always been more than just a sport; it is a passion that has taken her from local pools to the global stage. Having made her debut at the World Aquatics Junior Championships back in 2022, she now returns with more experience and the goal of one day qualifying for the Olympic Games.
Balancing schoolwork and high-level training is not easy, but Sarah’s dedication shines through. Her days are filled with rigorous swim sessions, strength and conditioning workouts, and the focus needed to excel both academically and athletically. Despite the challenges, she is excited to compete against the world’s best junior swimmers and gain invaluable experience at such a prestigious event.
