History will be made on the 26th of August when the Springboks don red when they face Argentina in Salta during the Rugby Championship.
Allister Coetzee’s men will wear the limited-edition alternate jersey to commemorate the 25th anniversary of rugby unity in South Africa.
Green, yellow and blue, three of the four colours of the South African flag have all featured in playing and training apparel this year, and the red jersey completes the “jigsaw puzzle.”
Only a limited number of replica jerseys will be available in stores from Wednesday, August 9.
“We wanted to mark the 25th anniversary of rugby in South Africa in a striking and memorable way and in partnership with ASICS came up with this bold alternate strip,” said CEO Jurie Roux.
“We chose the colours of the flag as a uniting symbol and believed that red made the boldest statement as a tribute to the achievement of rugby unity, which was completed before democracy arrived in South Africa.”
Meanwhile, lock Eben Etzebeth has been confirmed as the Springbok captain in the injury absence of regular skipper Warren Whiteley. The Stormer led the Boks in the third and final test against France in June, when Whiteley was ruled out because of a groin injury.
With the Lion loose-forward set to miss the opening part of the Rugby Championship, Etzebeth will wear the armband, while Siya Kolisi has been named vice-captain.
