Surfers are coming together to catch a whopping 100 waves in just one day in an effort to raise funds for at-risk youth! Thanks to community organisation 9Miles, young people have the chance to change their lives regardless of their circumstances. And, with a surfing army backing them, that chance is stronger than ever.
Strandfontein, South Africa (24 March 2025) — In May this year, rookies and rockstars on surfboards alike will join forces for the 100 Wave Challenge. A first-of-its-kind event for Cape Town and South Africa, the challenge will see surfers boasting different levels of experience rise to the occasion as they attempt to catch 100 waves in just one day.
Inspired by the California chapter of the challenge that was initiated by the Boys to Men Mentoring Network, the idea is to use the love of surfing to create a ripple effect of good for young people.
Meet 9Miles
In Cape Town, the 9Miles Project is driving the challenge with utmost excitement as they hope to raise funds to support at-risk children and youngsters.
Supporting at-risk youth through surf therapy, community, and mentorship is what community organisation 9Miles has been all about for over a decade! Started by Nigel Savel and his wife Sher’Neil in 2013 with a few boards and many dreams, today, 9Miles is something of a portal into another world far away from tough circumstances and crime-ridden communities that many children are born into.
By inviting surfers to catch 100 waves in one day, 9Miles is hoping to raise R100,000 to support this mission that gives at-risk youth the chance to experience another way of life and the opportunity to nurture new mindsets.
“Life isn’t easy for many of the kids we walk alongside,” share the 9Miles team. “Safe spaces are rare, but the ocean offers healing, joy, and discipline. Through surfing, education, and mentorship, we’re building bridges to a better tomorrow.”

Catching 100 Waves in One Day
“It’s simple: Raise a minimum of R1000 to take part. Break it down—10 friends donating R100 each, and you’re in,” explain the team, adding that participants will have from sunrise to sunset to catch as many waves as they can.
The challenge is open to individuals and groups and will take place at the Strandfontein Pavilion on 2-3 May.
