Team South Africa earned three medals, two gold, and a sliver, this weekend as well as setting a new world record and an African record.
Tokyo, Japan (30 August 2021) – Team South Africa has already earned two gold medals over the weekend. The team then went on to earn a silver this morning. That is three new medals to celebrate!
The very first gold of this sporting event was earned by Anruné Weyers and the second by Ntando Mahlangu.
Anruné Weyers won her gold in the women’s 400m (T47) final. She won in 56.05sec. Ntando Mahlangu earned himself the gold and a new world record.
“Ntando Mahlangu won #TeamSA’s 2nd medal of the #Tokyo2020 Paralympics with a final leap of 7.17m in the men’s T63 long jump to give him the GOLD. It was a WORLD RECORD in the T61 category!” – Team South Africa
The third medal earned by Team South Africa, was by long-distance runner Louzanne Coetzee and her guide Erasmus Badenhorst. Louzanne earned the silver in the 1500m final (T11). To earn her place in the race, Louzanne beat her personal best of 4:49.24. She then went on to set the new African record for the 1500m with a time of 4:40.96.
It is an exciting day to celebrate these wins. SASCOC has confirmed that the South African medalists will receive rewards for their efforts!
- Gold medal winners will be rewarded with R450 000 with their coach earning R120 000
- Silver medal winners will be rewarded with R220 000 with their coach earning R70 000
- Bronze medal winners will be rewarded with R100 000 with their coach winning R30 000
- World Record-breaking feats will earn athletes R180 000
