For the first time since the pandemic, the South African National Transplant Games are back on; this year, the games will take place in July 2022.

South Africa (22 March 2022) – The pandemic put a hold on many sporting events globally, and this included any Transplant Games. Transplant recipients are always at a higher risk of getting sick so protecting them is vital; however, as the world opens, the games can be hosted again.

South African Transplant Sports Association (SATSA) happily announced the 2022 games earlier today. This gives athletes the chance to get ready for the upcoming games. To date, 92 athletes have signed up to take part.

Transplant recipients include those who have had kidney, pancreas, lung, liver, heart and bone marrow transplants.

“South Africa’s transplanted athletes and supporters will descend on Gqeberha from 7th till 10th July 2022 to compete in the 14th National Transplant Games (NTG) hosted by the Eastern Cape Region of the South African Transplant Sports Association (SATSA). 92 Athletes have entered the Games to showcase their skills.”

“It sets the stage to demonstrate the improved quality of life following transplantation and through that, promote awareness about organ donation and transplantation. This is also an opportunity for transplanted athletes to show their gratitude towards living donors and families of deceased donors.”

Nelson Mandela University’s Faculty of Health Sciences and Madibaz Sport Department are partnering with Transplant Sports by making available sports facilities and the knowledge and expertise of staff and students.

This is a “Celebration of New Life” where athletes who have received organ and bone marrow transplants will compete in 13 different sports events. On Friday 8th July, all the non-athletics events will take place at venues on the University Campus, as well as venues all over the city. These events will include:

  • Cycling
  • Table tennis
  • Golf
  • Darts
  • 5km Road race
  • Tennis
  • Ten Pin Bowling
  • Lawn Bowls
  • Badminton
  • Squash
  • Petanque

On Saturday 9th July, the focus turns to Track and Field Athletics that will take place in the Madibaz Stadium on the University campus. This year donors and donor family members will participate in certain events with the athletes. The public is invited to support these exceptional athletes at no cost.

SATSA also makes use of this opportunity to include the community. A Fun Walk and transplant awareness event will take place on Friday 8th July on the Promenade.
