East London is playing host to the upcoming World Waveski Surfing Championships adding yet another international sporting event to the proudly South African calendar.
East London, South Africa (17 January 2024) – South Africa is proving to be a hot destination for sporting events. East London will be hosting the World Waveski Surfing Championships from June 28th to July 7th, 2024. The iconic Nahoon Reef will be the place to be for all Waveski enthusiasts.
Earlier this week, registrations for the event opened. The globally acclaimed event has drawn participants from over 15 countries, bringing together more than 100 athletes all vying for the prestigious silverware and the coveted title of World Champion.
Athletes will be competing in categories such as Open Men, Open Women, Age Group divisions, and Adaptive. Reigning champions, Team France, are set to defend their titles, with Open Men’s Champion Cyril Samson and Open Women’s Champion Lou Peter leading the charge.
Held biennially, the World Waveski Surfing Titles showcase the combination of paddling and surfing in the dynamic water sport of waveski surfing. Surfers skilfully ride the waves while seated on a specialized board, akin to a surfboard, utilizing a paddle to carve through the surf with finesse.
Global waveski surfers are eager to display their dedication and prowess on the renowned waves of Nahoon. This right-hand reef break, once home to the Gunston 500 and likened in power to Hawaii’s Sunset by legendary surfer Sunny Garcia, promises an exceptional display of waveski action. Nahoon Reef’s reputation for high-quality, powerful waves ensures a spectacular backdrop for this ultimate waveski surfing event.
The journey to host the World Titles on African shores began in 2022 when the South African Waveski Surfing Association ventured to Ventura, California, to bid for the opportunity to host the World Titles. The bid was met with overwhelming support, paving the way for Buffalo City to proudly welcome tourists to this breathtaking region.
Event organizer Trystan Viaene shares, “This is an opportunity for Buffalo City and its stakeholders to welcome tourism to this beautiful region. We have a lot of work to do to ensure Nahoon Reef is ready for this significant event, but the excitement is palpable, and we cannot wait to extend a warm welcome to the world.”
As the countdown intensifies for the World Waveski Surfing Titles, the world waveski surfing community eagerly anticipates the unfolding drama on the shores of Nahoon Reef, where skill, dedication, and the artistry of waveski surfing are set to take centre stage in a dazzling display of aquatic excellence.
