Wayde Van Niekerk was in Ostrava, Czech Republic competing at the Golden Spike meet. He won his 300m race and broke a world record while at it!
The world record for the 300m was held by Michael Johnson, this isn’t the first time that Wayde has broken one of Michael’s records! Back at the Rio Olympics Wayde broke Michael’s 400m world record with a time of 43.03sec.
At the Golden Spike meet in Ostrava, Czech Republic Wayde set off on the trace and beat Michael’s 300m race by a whopping 4 seconds with a finishing time of 30.81sec. Michael set his record in 2000.
Technically 300m race records are not officially ratified but this can be considered a personal best for Wayde.
“I’m so pleased and grateful for this big achievement,”
“Thanks to all the people of Ostrava for this wonderful meeting. I’m honoured to be a small part of history.
Wayde is also the first athlete to break 10sec for the 100m, 20sec for the 200m and 44sec for the 400m. Usain Bolt who is busy working at retiring in style has pegged Wayde as his successor when he retires at the end of the season. It is a huge thing to hear that from the worlds fastest man!
The next big race will be in London for the IAAF World Championships in August!
“There’s still a lot of work to be done, I have faith in my coach, I just go out and try to execute to the best of my ability. This world record is a blessing. It’s a massive confidence booster,”
