Team South Africa earned the gold medal in the men’s 4x100m relay by a fraction of a second, raising the flag high for the first time since the pandemic.

Silesia, Poland (03 May 2021) – South Africans are the talk of the World Relays hosted in Poland over the weekend. The Men’s 4×100 team earned the gold by a fraction of a second.

National 100m champion Akani Simbine received the baton from teammate Clarence Munyai for the final leg with South Africa running slightly behind Brazil. Simbine ran the fastest he could, crossing the finishing line alongside Brazilian runner Paulo André Camilo de Oliveira.

Commentators all called a Brazilian win, but Akani stood in hope below the board, waiting to see the final win announcement. As the South African flag popped up, everyone screamed with excitement.

What we have loved most about this is not only the win, but also being able to see our South African athletes back on the track, flying the flag high, win or lose. Considering the year we have all had; all the challenges athletes have faced during the lockdowns, it is fantastic to see everyone back to “normal”.

The relay team was made up by Clarence Munyai, Akani Simbine, Thando Dlodlo and Gift Leotlela. This win is a boost ahead of the Tokyo Olympics! The Men’s 4x400m relay team also earned their place at the Olympics this weekend, another reason to celebrate today.
