When young people unite behind a common purpose, they create remarkable change. At last week’s Rise Against Hunger Community Meal Packing Event, Scouts rolled up their sleeves to pack over 10,000 nutritious meals to feed 44 children every school day for an entire academic year!
Cape Town, South Africa (31 August 2026) – Driven by energy, heart, and a shared purpose, the hall at 1st Table View Scouts came alive last Wednesday as Scouts, Adult Leaders, Rovers, parents, friends, and family joined hands for a Rise Against Hunger Community Meal Packing Event.
The event brought together volunteers from four Scout Groups within Scouts South Africa‘s Table Bay District: 1st Blaauwberg Scouts, 1st Bothasig Scouts, 1st Milnerton Scouts and host group 1st Table View Scouts.

Together, the team rallied around a single, compassionate goal: packing 9,000 nutritious meals to reach children in need. Working side by side, they measured ingredients, sealed meal packs, labelled and boxed every meal for distribution through Rise Against Hunger Africa.
The evening exceeded every expectation:
- 10,152 nutritious meals packed
- Completed in just one hour and 15 minutes
- More than 60 volunteers
- 1,152 meals above the original target

These meals will be distributed through Rise Against Hunger Africa, helping provide nutritious meals to children in underserved communities. Based on the final total, the event produced enough meals to feed 44 children every school day for an entire academic year.
The packing evening was about far more than the numbers. It showcased the power of young people working together in service of others. Scouts worked alongside Adult Leaders, Rovers, parents, friends and supporters, demonstrating how teamwork, leadership and compassion can create a lasting impact.
For many of the young people involved, it was an opportunity to experience first-hand how just a few hours of volunteering can help change lives while living the Scout Promise through meaningful service.
1st Table View Scouts sent a special thank you to Gavin, Andile and Tasneem from Rise Against Hunger Africa for partnering with them and making this initiative possible.
“Their guidance, enthusiasm and support allowed our Scouts to see firsthand how every meal packed represents hope for a child they may never meet. Their passion and encouragement throughout the evening helped make the event both memorable and meaningful for everyone involved,” said 1st Table View Scouts Assistant Troop Scouter, Yolandé Young.
“We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who volunteered from 1st Blaauwberg Scouts, 1st Bothasig Scouts, 1st Milnerton Scouts and 1st Table View Scouts. Your willingness to give your time, energy and enthusiasm transformed an ambitious goal into an outstanding success.”
The event shone as a testament that when communities unite behind a common purpose, young people are capable of achieving extraordinary things. Every scoop of rice, every sealed meal pack and every box prepared represented hope, dignity and the promise of a brighter future for children in need.

Yolandé said she could not be prouder of what the Scouts and volunteers achieved.
“Scouting teaches young people to help other people at all times. This event allowed our Scouts to turn that promise into action while showing that even a single evening of service can make a meaningful difference. Seeing four Scout Groups unite in support of children they may never meet was a powerful reminder of what Scouting is all about,” Yolandé concluded.
