It is said that “a picture is worth a thousand words.” But in this case, the sound expresses even more than the picture — the sound made by a dog who, after years of abuse, finally experiences a loving touch.

The videos first posted on the 2 December 2015, but it’s quickly going viral. The title roughly translates to “Woman petting a dog for the first time after being abused for years, touching reaction,” and you can’t help but be touched as you watch.

The actual incident happened on November 11th in Breasta animal shelter in Craiova, Romania. Craiova is known as “The European Capital of Canine Cruelty” for the brutal handling of shelter animals.

Luckily, the pooch learned to trust humans again, and has recently found himself a home in the UK.

Be forewarned that this video is difficult to watch. It brought us to tears. You’ve likely never heard the kind of harrowing cries this dog makes, and if you have your own dogs in the house, it may upset them, too. But the woman doesn’t give up, and through the dog’s cries never stops caressing it with soothing words and gentle stroking.

She gradually gains the dog’s trust, and it turns around to face her, looking up into her eyes as its cries diminish. Despite the abuse this poor dog must have suffered, it shows the resilience of spirit that makes us love dogs so much. “Love me,” the dog seems to say, its fear ebbing away. “Love me, and I will love you back.”
