For anyone plotting a getaway in 2026, this might be the easiest travel planning you’ll do all year. The latest Passport Index is out, and South Africans can now travel visa-free to 59 countries, with Bolivia joining the list and Kenya making a welcome return.

South Africa (05 January 2026) – A new year brings fresh travel dreams and some good news for South African passport holders. According to the 2026 Passport Index, South Africans can now explore 59 countries around the world without needing a visa, making spontaneous trips and long-held bucket-list plans a little easier to pull off.

The Passport Index ranks every passport globally, based on how freely holders can travel. This year, South Africa sits at 46th place, giving local travellers access to just over half the world with minimal paperwork. In real terms, that means fewer forms, fewer fees and far less admin standing between you and your next adventure.

There are also some positive shifts in this year’s update. Bolivia has been added to South Africa’s visa-free list, opening up access to everything from salt flats to ancient ruins, while Kenya is back, restoring easier travel to one of Africa’s most-loved destinations.

While visa rules are always subject to change and travellers are still encouraged to double-check entry requirements before booking flights, the overall picture remains encouraging. South Africans continue to enjoy meaningful global access, even as passport rankings shift year to year.

There are still countries that require visas or visas on arrival, but below we’ve highlighted the 59 destinations South Africans can currently visit visa-free, along with stay limits where applicable.
