Sometimes the most beautiful stories unfold right in front of us. A Howick resident recently had her eyes opened to the love, care and life-changing support happening every day behind the gates of Angels Care.

Howick, South Africa (23 August 2026) – Have you ever walked or driven past a familiar building regularly, if not every day, but never stopped to ask yourself what it is for or what happens inside?

Howick resident Zulu Olwethu recently opened up about how, while she knew Angels’ Care Centre was a school in her community, she did not know how lives were being supported and transformed within its walls every day.

“For the longest time, I looked at Angels Care Centre in Howick and thought, ‘It’s a beautiful school for children,’” she shared in a post.

However, on Thursday, Olwethu got to see a completely different side of what this organisation does for her community.

During a visit to the Centre, Olwethu’s eyes were opened to so much more than just a school.

She discovered that Angels Care has after-school programmes where children from other primary and high schools are welcomed after classes, have something to eat and, where needed, get to take food home.

“There are spaces for reading, artwork, music and sport, giving children opportunities they may not always have access to elsewhere.”

Olwethu was also impressed by the hall, which offered an inviting space for people in the community to enjoy coffee, food and connection, adding another beautiful dimension to the whole environment.

But what touched her most was learning that there was also support for victims of GBV and sexual assault, with the organisation working hand in hand with the police and detectives who deal with these cases.

“There is a safe and secure environment where victims can receive counselling and support, and even have a place to bathe, sleep and feel cared for during an incredibly difficult time. For many people, walking into a police station can already feel intimidating or scary, especially when you have to report something as deeply personal as sexual assault. Knowing that there is a safe, welcoming place within our community where victims can receive support, counselling and care makes such a difference,” Olwethu noted.

She also had the opportunity to meet Angels Care chairperson Dr Hancock, who spoke about the work and the people they serve.

“You can genuinely see how much love, thought and purpose has been poured into this initiative,” Olwethu admired.

And even though members of her own family had attended Angels Care before, Olwethu never fully understood the extent of what happens behind those gates. Discovering it for herself inspired and moved her deeply.

As she beautifully put it:

“I left there thinking: How many people in Howick actually know what is happening behind those gates? Sometimes we see a building every day and think we know what it is, without knowing the lives being touched inside. And the beautiful thing is that we can all contribute.”

Olwethu invited her online friends to recognise, support and amplify the people who are uplifting and supporting their communities, just as the dedicated Angels Care team does daily.
