If you need a reason to smile today, just look at Leo! Seven years into his second chance.
Swellendam, South Africa (25 August 2026) – We love sharing stories like these because they speak to new beginnings. They speak to the power of giving a life once so vulnerable and neglected a second chance.
Leo is seven years into his second chance now, and he’s a top contender for happiest dog in the world.

It wasn’t always so. Leo arrived at Swellendam SPCA in 2019.
An unclaimed stray, the loneliness and neglect of his then eight years on this earth had taken its toll. Mange and hot spots covered his small body. His coat was terribly matted. But his eyes carried an unmistakable innocence and gentle nature, even though he had never known love or family.

The SPCA took him in. They treated his mange, fixed up his coat, and, with time, his body slowly began to recover. Still, the kennels were no place for the beautiful eight-year-old boy.
The team who cared for him wanted nothing more than to find him his fresh start. A forever family that could give him as many happy years as the lonely ones he had already survived.

This, friends, is another instance of social media being a powerful tool for change. The SPCA shared Lionel’s (now called Leo) story on Facebook. He won all the hearts, and people even donated to fund his care.
“…From day one, he captured the hearts of staff, volunteers, and kind supporters across the country who helped fund his care.” the SPCA shares.
Then, one very special person stepped forward. She had fallen in love and, without hesitation, opened her arms to give Leo the forever he deserved. She fetched him from Swellendam and brought him all the way to her Johannesburg home.

This is where Leo has lived for the past seven years of his life. The only thing he knows now is love. And it shows.
“Fast forward to today—Leo is THRIVING at 15 years old and yesterday he celebrating 7 years in his forever home!” the SPCA shared, in celebrating Leo’s 7th happy homing anniversary. “Thanks to the love of his amazing mom, Leo is living the life every senior dog deserves…Just look at him now…”
A second chance changed everything for this old boy, who has now found his deserving spot on the lap of luxury. After a life of neglect, he has learned the most important four-letter word.

The story of Leo’s second life touched many hearts on Facebook.
“How absolutely amazing that his adoptive family turned his life around through their love for him. And look how he responded…” writes Mechele Cawcutt
“Always the best to see pets happily rehomed,” says Colette Mang.
“Go well beautiful Leo and enjoy your new life forever filled with love, cuddles, attention and devotion…” remarks Marlize Roos.
