The Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) used art to get their point across while celebrating World Wildlife Day 2019!
Treasure Beach, Durban – In celebration of World Wildlife Day, WESSA Treasure Beach held a ‘Beyond the Classroom Experience’ for local schools. This year they themed it “Life Below Water” and the focus was on marine life. The event took place on Saturday, 2nd March 2019 and was all about fun and learning.
Treasure Beach EE Centre has been educating children about the environment for over thirty years. Treasure Beach provides a well-rounded outdoor classroom as it is surrounded by a rocky shore, grassland and dune forest.
“The schools began arriving from 07h30 and, after registration, around 200 students headed down to the rocky shore to investigate, hands on, the ecology of intertidal zones while also learning about the geography of the Kwazulu-Natal coastal environment – currents, weather and climate change – and why sand dunes and dune forests are vital for the protection of the coastal environment, especially with the extreme weather and sea-level rise we are beginning to experience as a result of climate change.
The final focus was on the massive problem of plastic pollution along the KZN coast, and the impact it is having on both humans and marine life.
On returning from the beach, the students visited the stands of WESSA’s projects where various educational activities had been set up. Membership youth volunteers Kali Geldenhuys, Kerry Cross and Nadine Ramlall had set up two stands and prepared a range of activities relating to life under the sea and highlighting plastic waste.”
Environmental educators Nana and Nonny from the Umbogavango Environmental Education Centre where on hand to help any of the curious kids.
