Just look at that face! A lost kitty that had been living in the drains of a residential area in Bryanston for six months has been reunited with his family in Sunninghill!
Johannesburg, South Africa (14 January 2026) – A reader, Zita Baumeister, was just going about her evening when she spotted a cat outside her complex last week. He wasn’t skittish or scared. In fact, he walked straight up to her like he’d been waiting for someone to notice him!
“He’s got the most striking looks,” Zita says. “An American Shorthair, and honestly the friendliest, most loveable kitty.”
Reports from multiple WhatsApp groups said they’d seen him living in the drains along Milcliff Road for a few months. He looked okay, but he was hungry. He had no collar, but he clearly knew people.
Zita scooped him up and took him straight to Fourways Vet to check for a microchip. No chip. Still, she couldn’t shake the feeling that this boy belonged to someone.
While she searched, she arranged for him to stay with foster care with help from Tiny Whiskers Kitten Rescue. That night, she posted about him on Facebook and local community groups, hoping someone would recognise him. The next day, the message came…
His name is Zuki, and his family has been looking for him since June last year. They shared that he’d gone missing from Sunninghill and that a search team had once followed his scent to a river but couldn’t go any further.
“Zuki has been reunited with his family after having gone missing in June last year in Sunninghill! The family had engaged the services of Healthy Hound Missing Pet Search & Rescue who managed to track his scent to the river, but couldn’t go any further.” Zita explained.
