I’ve compiled a list of 6 things that help me, even on the darkest of days. Maybe some of these techniques will help you when you might need some motivation to get onto your “stage”.
South Africa (23 May 2023) – The other day I was asked what I do when I’m having a “bad” day and still have to get on stage to do a Keynote.
Ja friends, even I have days when the world seems to conspire against me and everything feels heavy – motivation seems like an elusive friend but I still have a job to do. It’s during these challenging times that life often demands the most from us, pushing us to summon our inner strength and rise above adversity.
So I’ve compiled a list of 6 things that help me, even on the darkest of days. Maybe some of these techniques will help you when you might need some motivation to get onto your “stage”.
1. Acknowledge your emotions: The first step towards self-motivation on a difficult day is to recognise and accept your emotions. It’s okay to feel down, overwhelmed, or frustrated. Give yourself permission to experience these emotions without judgment. Hold these emotions with so much kindness. By acknowledging your feelings, you can create space to process them and begin the journey towards a positive mindset.
2. Remind yourself of your purpose: Whatever that purpose is. Keynote speeches are rarely about us as individuals; they’re about sharing knowledge, inspiring others, and making a difference. That’s my purpose. So take a moment to reconnect with your purpose. Find your why. Remind yourself of the value you bring.
3. Seek support and encouragement: Remember that you don’t have to do it all and you don’t have to do it alone. Reach out to trusted friends, colleagues, or mentors who can provide support and encouragement. Discussing your concerns and seeking advice from those who believe in you can help shift your perspective and infuse you with the motivation you need.
4. Practice self-care: Taking care of your physical and mental well-being is crucial, especially on challenging days. Prioritise self-care activities that nurture and rejuvenate you. It could be engaging in exercise, meditation, listening to music, or simply taking a walk (I call them my menty-b walks). By investing time in self-care, you recharge your energy reserves and equip yourself to tackle the stage with renewed motivation.
5. Embrace the power of visualisation: Visualisation is a powerful technique used by many successful individuals around the world. Close your eyes and vividly imagine yourself doing the thing – whatever that thing is – and doing it well. This exercise helps create a positive mindset, amplifying your motivation and belief in your own abilities.
6. Embrace the challenge: Instead of viewing a bad day as an obstacle, reframe it as an opportunity for growth. Remember the “get to” discussion? Ja, change “have to” to “get too”. Embrace the challenge and view it as a chance to prove to yourself that you can overcome any obstacle. By adopting a positive mindset and embracing the situation, you empower yourself to transform a bad day into a triumphant experience.
Remember, self-motivation is a journey, and it requires patience and persistence. It’s okay if you don’t feel an instant surge of motivation. Sometimes, the act of pushing through despite adversity itself becomes a testament to your resilience and strength.
All it takes is 3 seconds of bravery. Remember that.
So, on those tough days when the “stage” awaits and your spirit feels weary, dig deep within yourself. Acknowledge your emotions, reconnect with your purpose, seek support, practice self-care, visualise success, and embrace the challenge.
With every step you take towards self-motivation, you’ll inch closer to doing that thing with renewed vigour and the unwavering belief that you have what it takes to shine, even on your toughest days.
Yes my friends, you’ve got this! The world stage awaits the bright light that you are!
Okay. Love you. Bye.
